The Arenal Volcano and surrounding areas in Costa Rica are known for their rich biodiversity and stunning natural landscapes. The rainforest is home to an impressive amount of flora and fauna, including almost 75% of Costa Rica’s 850 bird species. The lush vegetation provides a habitat for a wide variety of animals, including monkeys, sloths, and toucans. The area is home to a diverse array of plants, including a variety of tropical rainforest species such as ferns, orchids, and bromeliads. The volcano has been active for thousands of years, and has erupted several times in recent history. The last major eruption occurred in 1968, which caused significant damage to the surrounding areas and resulted in the evacuation of the nearby towns. The Arenal Volcano National Park, which was established in 1991, offers visitors the chance to explore the surrounding rainforests and see a variety of unique flora and fauna. The Arenal Lake was created in 1979 with the construction of the Arenal hydroelectric dam, causing several towns to be moved from the flood region to the current shores of the lake.
