Costa Rica Entry Requirements

Passports and Visas
Passports and Visas

Travelers to Costa Rica need a passport valid for at least six months from entry and must show proof of a return ticket within 90 days.

Not everyone requires a tourist visa to enter Costa Rica. Citizens from the US, Canada, UK, and EU don’t require a visa; their passport will be stamped for up to 90 days. Check here for visa requirements for other countries.

It’s recommended to carry a photocopy of the passport’s photo page and another ID, like a driver’s license.

Yellow Fever Vaccination
Yellow Fever Vaccination

As of July 30, 2007, travelers from certain African and South American countries must have a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Costa Rica.

It’s advisable to check if your country is on the list.

Costa Rica Essential Information

Costa Rica Location
  • Location: Costa Rica is a democratic, independent republic in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. It is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
  • Provinces: The country is divided into 7 provinces: San José, Alajuela, Cartago, Heredia, Puntarenas, Guanacaste, and Limón.
  • Area: Costa Rica stretches across 51,100 sq. kilometers (19,730 sq. miles).
  • Population: A little over 5 million.
  • Official language: Spanish, although English is widely spoken.
International Airports

Travelers can choose between San José (SJO) and Guanacaste (LIR) airports, depending on their itinerary.

LIR is ideal for trips focused on Guanacaste and Arenal, while SJO offers a broader selection of flights; it is more central and convenient for those traveling around the country. Consult your trip designer for the best airport based on your plans.
